Fiat Confirms Convertible Version of 500

Fiat Auto on Monday confirmed it would be bringing a convertible version of its new 500 to market.

Some news can always be anticipated, but formal confirmations of new products always have a bigger impact. This applies to the convertible version of Fiat 500, confirmed to Just-Auto.com by the Styling Director of Fiat himself, Roberto Giolito, during the Automotive News Europe Congress. One year ago, we have already spoken about a topless version of the small Italian, as well as a bigger version of it, the Giardinera, a station wagon for Fiat to face the Mini Clubman.

Besides making the launch of the car almost official (we will have to wait for a press release in order to consider the 500 Cabrio more than a sure thing), Giolito also stated, according to Just-Auto.com, that the new version of the 500 will have a fabric top, instead of the foldable hard tops that are becoming increasingly popular. Although it was more than expected, due to the small dimensions of the car, but fabric tops are also said to have been considerably improved. If this charming future convertible manages to be as silent and well built as its hardtop version, success is sure to be in its way, whether the top is on or off.

Gemballa Avalanche 600 GT2 EVO

The tuning scene is booming in Europe, the USA and Japan, with more and more tuning companies as a result but few are regarded as highly as Porsche specialists Gemballa. Today the German tuning house bursts onto the scene with a 600 bhp Porsche GT2 (or Porsche 997 Turbo) conversion that can hold its own with the Maranello and Sant'Agata-Bolognese in-crowd.

Gemballa has a few tweeks in store for your unsuspecting GT2 or 997 Turbo like a power kit that will boost power to 600 bhpn (442 kW) with 840 Nm of torque, body kit, sports exhaust, coilover suspension, 20 inch 'Racing' wheels and a luxurious interior. The new power can propel the car from stand still to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds.

The body kit consists of the Avalanche body kit, a GT hood, Avalanche front skirt with additional cooling openings, GT2 front spoiler lip, GTR EVO tailgate skirt with diffuser and hot air outlets and GT2 EVO rear spoiler. All in all, the car looks fast even when standing still.

Of course power is nothing without control, so Gemballa also fits a variable ride height coilover suspension and a performance brake system with 380/350 mm or 405/380 discs. Inside you will find plenty of aluminum details, sports steering wheel (F1 shift paddles optional) and a leather interior overhaul if your donor vehicle didn't have it already. But if you have something else in mind, Gemballa will be happy to cater to your fancies.

Peugeot 206 reviews

Peugeot launched the successful 206 as a three- and five-door hatchback range, but it just can’t stop spawning new models.First there was the 206 CC – one of 2002's must-have cars – with a clever folding metal roof that turns it from tin-top to soft-top at the flick of a switch. Used examples at independent retailers are usually strongly priced. Then there’s the 206 SW estate, which head-to-head with Fabia in the compact estate market. It's stylish, practical and offered with a wide range of engine. Finally, there's the uprated GTi, evoking memories of the 205 GTi for ‘hot hatch’ fans.

The 206 was a fine car in its day - but that was some time ago. Since the bigger and better 207 was introduced, Peugeot has kept the 206 on as a cut-price alternative. The range has been thinned down and only basic versions are now available.

Peugeot's design team certainly got their finger on the pulse with the 206's styling, which won praise from introduction and propelled the car to the top of the sales charts across Europe. Even now there's still a strong appeal to the chic design, indeed in many ways it looks better than the rotund, overweight 207.

But inside the 206's cabin the car's age is all-too apparent, with lots of very cheap-looking plastics, poor ergonomic design and a famously uncomfortable driving position. Space is poor for rear seat passengers and the boot is cramped, too.

On the road the 206 redeems itself to a degree. Dynamically, it's an engaging companion with keen handling and well-weighted steering. Motorway refinement is indifferent, though, although the pliant ride makes for comfortable progress over rougher road surfaces.

The entry-level 1.4 litre petrol engine is by far the most sensible powerplant in the range, giving reasonable performance and low running costs - especially when bought with the sort of generous discount that Peugeot dealers will offer. For most users, the basic 1.4 litre HDI diesel motor is too loud and crude to offset the savings it will make in terms of fuel economy, although the more powerful 110 bhp 1.6 litre HDI diesel is impressively punch.
